Mantis is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Steve Englehart and Don Heck, she first appeared in The Avengers #112 in 1973.
Born in Vietnam to Libra, of the Zodiac, Mantis was raised by the Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree, who believed she was destined to become the Celestial Madonna, a being of great cosmic significance.
Trained in martial arts and imbued with empathic abilities, Mantis possesses a heightened awareness of others' emotions and can manipulate plant life. She is a master strategist and a formidable hand-to-hand combatant.
Mantis has been a member of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and other superhero teams. Her history is complex, with periods of amnesia and rebirth. She plays a key role in several major Marvel storylines involving cosmic beings.
The character was popularized outside of comics through her portrayal by Pom Klementieff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Endgame. Her MCU character retains her empathic abilities but is presented as more naive and humorous.
